Child Development Services (CDS) 

The CDS provide comprehensive care to children with developmental and psychological disorders. The multidisciplinary team functions under the guidance of Dr. P. Krishnakumar, the director of IMHANS and an additional Professor of Pediatrics in the medical education service of Govt. of Kerala with more than 20 years of experience in child psychiatry. The team CDS includes psychiatrist, medical officer, speech pathologist, audiologist, clinical psychologist, early intervention therapist, occupational therapist, special educator, psychiatric social worker and OP attender. In addition to the core team, the services of faculty from the different departments at IMHANS are provided at the CDS. 

Early detection and early intervention for developmental disorders beginning from the high-risk newborn follow-up clinic is unique to the CDS. The services available at the CDS include speech and language assessment and remedial therapy services, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, remedial education for children with learning problems, behaviour therapy and counselling services. A separate centre for children with autism spectrum disorders is attached to the CDS, which receives financial support from the State Initiative ob Disabilities (SID) of Govt. of Kerala.

Outpatient clinics of the CDS functions on all working days as walk-in clinics. The OP registration time is from 9 am to 12 noon. Children below five years with developmental disorders are generally registered on Wednesdays, and the adolescent clinic for children in the 10 – 18 year age group functions on Saturdays. Though function as walk-in clinics, it is encouraged to obtain a detailed report from the school the child is studying. In the OP, preliminary evaluation is done by a medical officer on the day of registration. Those requiring detailed evaluation are given appointments. Children requiring specialized services are referred to the concerned specialities or therapists by the medical officer who does the initial work-up.
